New Italian law requires students to be vaccinated or face repercussions

No vaccine no school unvaccinated Italian children will be sent home

And while children of school age, which in Italy is six and above, can not be turned away, schools will reserve the right to impose a fine of up to €500 (A$800).

Italian children have been told not to turn up for school or preschool if they are not vaccinated.

The waiver was heavily criticised by the scientific and medical community, which said it could reverse progress made in boosting Italy's vaccination rates in recent years.

The required vaccinations are polio, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, pertussis, measles, rubella, mumps, chicken pox and Haemophilus influenzae type B. Officials in Bologna said that some 5,000 children in the city do not have proper documentation saying they have been vaccinated. It threatened to overturn the mandatory vaccination law passed by the previous government but ended up scrapping its plans in the face of criticism as the country experienced a measles outbreak last summer.

The new rules came into force on Tuesday and are part of the so-called "Lorenzin law", named after former Italian Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin.
