Vaping is erasing gains made against US teen smoking

US Surgeon General Dr Jerome Adams gives a statement on the use of e-cigarettes by teenagers in Washington,DC on Dec 18 2018

While health officials consider stricter vaping regulations, experts worry the popularity of e-cigarettes is sending the progress they've made on reducing youth tobacco use up in smoke. "It's putting a new generation at risk for nicotine addiction", CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said. In fact, a study conducted by the Centre for Substance Use Research UK, to be presented at the upcoming 2019 SRNT Annual Meeting, found that of all surveyed US adolescents aged 13-17 who reported ever using a JUUL device, a majority reported that they had initiated on a flavor not offered in JUUL products. (D-Burlington), a physician who heads the health committee, and John Armato (D-Atlantic) - would amend existing laws to prohibit individuals from completing the delivery of a tobacco product or e-cigarette device to any Garden State residence without first obtaining the signature of a person, 21 years of age or older who lives there.

"Unlike tobacco, electronic cigarettes are not regulated, and from what we know nicotine is already addicting and these electronic cigarettes contain more nicotine than cigarettes", said Robinson.

"We'll continue to take steps to try to investigate the root causes of this spike in youth e-cigarette use and arrest the momentum of these trends, in particular, by ensuring these products are sold in ways that make them less accessible and appealing to youth", he stated.

The CDC said the number of current cigarette smokers and consumers of other tobacco products in middle and high school remained roughly stable from 2017 to 2018.

King noted that an emerging body of science shows that kids who use e-cigarettes are more likely to smoke conventional cigarettes in the future.

This was supported by a recent study from the United Kingdom, showing that e-cigarettes, combined with behavioral counseling, was more effective in helping smokers quit compared to traditional treatments. The data also indicate that many youth tobacco product users use multiple products, with about 2 in 5 high school students and 1 in 3 middle school students reporting use of two or more tobacco products in 2018.

Sales of Juul, which is a high nicotine e-cigarette with vaping liquid contained in pods resembling USB devices, increased by approximately 600% during 2016-2017 and increased even further in 2018.

In a press statement, Scott Gottlieb, commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, expressed plans to create strong interventions as he fears that the youth trends will continue in 2019. "The devices also use nicotine salts, which can allow high amounts of nicotine to be inhaled more easily and with less irritation than the free-based nicotine that's used in most other e-cigarettes". Men also used tobacco products more frequently than women.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released its annual "Vital Signs" report.

The CDC said the ongoing rise in vaping among teens threatens to undo past progress in reducing rates of tobacco use among minors.

The U.S. Surgeon General has more about e-cigarettes and young people.
