Pentagon: U.S. Must Secure, Safeguard Capabilities in Space

New Pentagon report warns of Russian and Chinese laser threats to US satellites

The report warns that China has an operational missile, . capable of destroying satellites in low-Earth orbit. "Additionally, there is a wave of exciting commercial technologies and investments in space that are expanding the potential opportunities, the benefits we can all enjoy".

"The advantage that the United States holds in space - and our perceived dependence on it - will continue to drive actors to improve their abilities to operate in and through space", the report says.

Beijing has criticized a recent USA report accusing China and Russian Federation of attempting to militarize outer space, the apparent justification for President Donald Trump's ambitious global missile defense plan.

"Chinese and Russian doctrine indicate that they view space as important to modern warfare and view counterspace capabilities as a means to reduce USA and allied effectiveness", the senior official said.

'China has long advocated the peaceful use of outer space and opposes militarisation and an arms race in space, ' Hua said, adding that if the United States was serious about space security, then it should work with China to control arms development.

"A new Pentagon report on threats in space warns that China and Russian Federation are both developing capabilities to threaten the US" preeminent position, including lasers that could target and destroy U.S. satellites.

At the pumps, motorists had lower fuel costs last month, with petrol down by 2.1p per litre on the month to 119.6p. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast January's annual increase in the consumer price index at 2.48 percent.

China has demonstrated an anti-satellite missile and is working on a laser that could attack USA properties in space. But Rep. Mike Rogers, then-chairman of the US House Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee, told CNN in 2018 'the future of war will be fought in space.' 'Russia and China are surpassing us in space capabilities, and we need to dedicate a separate force exclusively with a space mission, ' he said. The treaty has been ratified by more than 100 countries including the United States, Russia, China, and North Korea.

Russia's numerous attempts to prevent the deployment of weapons in space have always faced resistance from the United States, which made Moscow think that Washington aspired for complete freedom in terms of weapons' installation in outer space and was not interested in peaceful initiatives.

"The use of space has greatly expanded USA military ability to project power globally", a US defense intelligence official said, adding they can do so with fewer troops deployed and therefore less risk to American service members. "The report says Russian Federation and China are also developing 'inspection and servicing" satellites that could also be used to conduct attacks on satellites in orbit.

"As the number of satellites grows, so does the threats posed by space debris", the official said.

Last month, the Defense Intelligence Agency released a report about China's military capabilities, warning that the Asian country was making advances in counterspace technology that could threaten USA satellites responsible for communications, reconnaissance, Global Positioning System and early warnings of missile launches.

"Space is fundamental to US prosperity", the Pentagon official said.
