Airline sues passenger after he purposely missed a flight

Airline sues passenger for not taking booked flight

Lufthansa is cracking down on a way for airline passengers to get cheaper fares-with a lawsuit that brings fresh attention to the practice. After using the outbound flight, instead of boarding the Frankfurt-to-Oslo return flight, he flew on a separate Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Berlin, according to CNN.

Though the practice could save a little money, it could be harmful to both the airlines and other passengers as well.

Lufthansa Airlines is suing a passenger, alleging he missed his flight on objective.

The precedent-setting case exposes the travel industry's disdain for the so-called "hidden city" hack- in which passengers book flights with their final destination as a layover point to avoid the higher cost of non-stop flights, CNN reported.

For example, someone hoping to travel from NY to Dallas might look for cheaper flights to Los Angeles that also stop in that city - and simply disembark there, rather than fly the full route to LAX.

Lufthansa are believed to be hit harder by the practice than other airlines because numerous company's flights are routed through the hubs of Frankfurt and Munich.

The German airline is suing a passenger who booked a Seattle-Frankfurt-Oslo flight, then saved money by skipping the last leg of the flight and taking another flight to his real destination, Berlin, CNN reports. Airline officials, however, would like to take it one step further by outlawing it completely. It is now seeking $2,385 in compensation.

Now, Lufthansa seeks compensation from the man on the order of $2,385, claiming the airline's been unfairly gamed.

Lufthansa lost the initial court case, but is appealing the decision.

However, that suit was thrown out by an IL judge, who said the district didn't have jurisdiction over the issue.

The principle that airlines charge less for more flights, lies behind pricing strategies by "network carriers" such as Lufthansa, Air France and British Airways.
