Michelle Obama's Grammy appearance did not impress mom

Plenty of star power shows up at Comerica Theatre in Phoenix

While the former FLOTUS scored a standing ovation as she helped open Sunday's show alongside Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez and Alicia Keys, a text she's shared from her mom, Marian Robinson, undoubtedly put her ego in check.

Obama, 55, made a surprise appearance on the Grammys stage Sunday and gave her mother a heads up to tune in - or so she thought.

Obama posted a screenshot of the text exchange to her Instagram account.

But her mother texted her two days later, saying: "I guess you were a hit at the Grammys". Her daughter asked mom if she had watched.

Obama told her mom that she was "a real star" but she brushed her off.

Giving Michelle the ultimate reality check after her Grammys debut, Marian brought her daughter back down to earth in a series of text messages.

After a text squabble over whether Michelle had told Marian she would be appearing on the show, she ended with a mic drop moment.

Mother-daughter relationships aren't any easier when you're famous.

'I felt like this was going to be a very hard life for both of them, ' she said of her granddaughters, who were seven and ten when their father took over as President of the United States.

Following her appearance, she had tweeted how she wanted to be there for Alicia Keys who was the host for the big night.

"Yeah", her mom responded.

'I mean, you think about my girls were being driven around in a motorcade of three cars with at least four grown adults with guns in each of those cars.
