Theresa May offers ministers 'meaningful vote' if no Brexit deal

The UK parliament last month roundly rejected a Brexit deal Prime Minister Theresa May had sealed with the remaining 27 EU leaders

Theresa May has been warned by senior Conservatives not to negotiate with Labour over Brexit.

Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said Sunday that parliament would get another chance to pass judgment on May's Brexit plan "by no later than February 27".

"I think that gives that sense of timetable, clarity and objective on what we are doing with the European Union - taking that work forward and our determination to get a deal - but equally knowing that role that Parliament very firmly has", he said on BBC's Andrew Marr Show.

May's opponents are expected to put forward a series of alternative approaches which will be voted upon, although it is not clear yet whether any will have sufficient support to pass, and if they do, whether they will force the government to act.

In an interview with the Sunday Times Mr Starmer described Mrs May's approach as "reckless" and "blinkered" and blamed her "tunnel vision" for the devastating defeat suffered last month when MPs threw out her Brexit deal by a record 230 votes. "And that's what we want to do this week".

If no deal on the changes to the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement has been reached with Brussels by Wednesday, as seems overwhelmingly likely, Mrs May will address MPs on progress made, say more time is needed for negotiations, and table a "neutral motion" for debate the following day.

"It is very clear from the European Union that non-EU members do not have a say in EU trade policy so to pretend that you could do so is a unsafe delusion".

The government has promised a formal response to the proposal and further talks with Labor.

Mountain Sounds festival has been cancelled with organisers claiming the government's "war on festivals" is to blame. The event will not be going ahead at Mount Penang Parklands next week", organisers said in a statement.

May has been seeking changes to the deal with Brussels since it was rejected by a record majority in parliament on January 15.

And Labor Ministers Peter Kyle and Phil Wilson are preparing to push for a second referendum, writing Sunday in The Independent: "It would also be reckless to accept the withdrawal agreement without the approval of the British people".

Britain has signed a trade continuity agreement with Switzerland to avoid disruption for thousands of businesses post-Brexit, less than 50 days before the United Kingdom is due to leave the EU.

Britain has long traded around the world under the terms of deals agreed by the European Union, a procedure that will come to an end after Brexit.

Last month, the Parliament approved an amendment that supported most of the deal but called for backstop - a last-resort option to prevent a hard border in Ireland to be replaced with "alternative arrangements".

Barnier reiterated the bloc's offer was to tweak the political declaration on EU-UK ties after Brexit that forms part of the package to reflect a plan for a closer future relationship that could obviate the need for the contentious backstop.

Prime Minister Theresa May is to give a statement to Parliament on Tuesday on the latest developments in Brexit talks, Downing Street announced.
