The last five years have been Earth's warmest since records began

Earth’s long-term warming trend can be seen in this visualization of NASA’s global temperature record which shows how the planet’s temperatures are changing over time compared to a baseline average from 1951 to 1980. The record is shown as a runni

The world temperature in 2018 was the fourth hottest ever recorded, only next to 2016 (the warmest), 2015 and 2017, say the specialists of the National Administration of Aeronautics and Space (NASA).

The report published by NASA confirmed that 2018 was 0.83 degrees Celsius or 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the temperature recorded from 1951 to 1980.

The latest figures mean 2018 ranks as the fourth-hottest year since modern record-keeping began in 1880.

The specialists explain that the temperature of 2018 in Europe was the highest recorded in the analyses of both institutions, with 1.78 Celsius degrees above the average.

That warming is driven by the amount of greenhouse gases humans have introduced into the atmosphere, particularly in the least 100 years, Schmidt said.

Air and sea surface temperature data from 6,300 weather stations, ship and buoy observations, and temperature measurements from Antarctic research stations were analyzed.

"What kind of planet is a planet that's four or five degrees warmer than it is now?"

"Increasing temperatures can also contribute to longer fire seasons and some extreme weather events".

"The impacts of long-term global warming are already being felt - in coastal flooding, heatwaves, intense precipitation and ecosystem change".

NASA announced today that 2018 was officially the 4th warmest year since the 1880s, with the fastest increase in warming found in the Arctic.

Though there are minor variations from year to year, all five temperature records show peaks and valleys in sync with each other.

Each new year may not set a temperature record but the long-term warming "resembles riding up an escalator over time and jumping up and down while on that escalator", said Deke Arndt, chief of NOAA's climate monitoring division, referring to variables such as the El Niño pattern. Deathly record lows are real in the U.S., but don't be fooled by the cooling that we have been witnessing, global warming is real also. The biggest divergence from the average occurred west of the Rockies and in the Southeast, and 14 states saw annual temperatures among the top highest on record. Taalas said that the deadly cold snap was entirely consistent with the effects of manmade climate change, including the warming of the poles. That's 1.42 degrees (0.79 Celsius) warmer than the 20th century average.

"The planet is warming. These included the awful wildfires in California and the devastating hurricanes Florence and Michael, all of which bear the fingerprints of climate change".
