Thailand's attorney-general's office has dropped the extradition case against jailed Bahraini footballer Hakeem al-Araibi, media outlets in Australia are reporting.

Chatchom said that Al-Araibi must now be released as soon as possible.

The player's Australia lawyer Latifa Al-Haouli of Sabelberg Morcos Lawyers, told SBS News on Monday legal staff were working with Thailand's department of corrections to secure Mr Al-Araibi's release imminently.

A Bahraini court sentenced him in absentia to 10 years in prison over claims by Bahraini authorities that he and a group of protesters attacked a police station with petrol bombs during the Arab Spring uprising.
