NASA Plans To Return To The Moon To Stay There

NASA begins search for partners to help land astronauts on the Moon

He said: "That starts with the Gateway - a lunar orbiting outpost created to ensure the safe transit of astronauts to the lunar surface and back home again".

NASA is now focused on its latest Mars probe, InSight, on the planet's surface Monday.

Bridenstine went on to say NASA is eager to get started "as quickly as possible" and have already committed to working with nine United States companies to start sending new science instruments to the moon's surface on commercial cargo deliveries.

NASA's Jim Bridenstine said: "As a life long NASA supporter I am thrilled to be talking once again about landing humans on the moon".

Through multi-phased lunar exploration partnerships, NASA is asking American companies to study the best approach to landing astronauts on the Moon and start the development as quickly as possible with current and future anticipated technologies. We are going to the moon with innovative new technologies and systems to explore more locations across the surface than we ever thought possible.

"Billions of people around the world will watch history being made as astronauts explore more of the surface for longer periods of time than ever before, and help us prepare for missions to Mars and other destinations", said Bridenstine, the NASA administrator. Private sector innovation is key to these NASA missions, and the NextSTEP public-private partnership model is advancing capabilities for human spaceflight while stimulating commercial activities in space. The moon is a very manageable three days travel from Earth.

Such moon expeditions, Clarke said, will not only give NASA a chance to "learn our lessons" on a non-Earth body, but it is also far closer than Mars.

"The Gateway will be the home base for the first reusable human lunar lander system". But, Musk's comments could also mean that the firm is simultaneously making plans to get to the Moon. Once the ability to harness resources from the Moon for propellant becomes viable, NASA plans to refuel these elements with the Moon's own resources.
