Kamala Harris supports legalizing marijuana, says she 'did inhale' in college

Two'Indian Americans eye the US Presidency

I have. And I inhaled. Kamala Harris on Monday said it is high time for the legalization of marijuana on the federal level - as she acknowledged that she once toked up in college.

Harris also called for legalizing marijuana in her recently released memoir, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey. "And I inhaled. I did inhale".

"That's not true", she told the show's host Charlamagne Tha God.

The Democratic senator also highlighted her support for legalizing marijuana, acknowledging that she smoked a joint "a long time ago" as she pushed back against accusations that she has opposed efforts to legalization.

"I think it gives a lot of people joy", she said. She said she supports it. Q: I know. HARRIS: And look, I joke about it - half-joking - half my family's from Jamaica. We need to move it on the schedule so that we can research the impact of weed on a developing brain. "And we need to expunge nonviolent marijuana-related offenses from the records of millions of people who have been arrested and incarcerated so they can get on with their lives". In addition, he lets her weigh in on some absurd claim out there that she's not really black and was raised in Canada. In 2010, Proposition 19 was on ballots in California. Members of the Silent Generation continue to be the least supportive of legalization (39%), but they have become more supportive in the past year.

Harris' stance, which aligns herself with a growing movement in the Democratic Party and even among some Republicans, appears to be at odds with where she stood in 2014 when she was running for re-election as California attorney general. That figure has doubled just in the last two decades. Majorities of Millennials (74%), Gen Xers (63%) and Baby Boomers (54%) say the use of marijuana should be legal. Almost 60 percent of Americans said they supported legalizing marijuana in a Fox News Poll released a year ago.

"Um, I - that he is entitled to his opinion", Harris replied. "Your thoughts on that?" the station asks her.

And last month, Harris raised the issue with William Barr, the nominee for USA attorney general.

Despite the federal ban, however, marijuana is legal for recreational use in 10 states and the District of Columbia.

Harris also opposed recreational legalization in 2015, but supports a proposed bill to decriminalize the drug by fellow senator and 2020 candidate Cory Booker (D-N.J.), according to The Hill.

Booker previous year introduced a bill to the Senate to legalize marijuana at the federal level and gained support from other likely 2020 rivals, including Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Bernie Sanders.
