The Ikea shopper took a photo of the map in a Washington D.C. store and uploaded it to the sub-Reddit '#MapsWithoutNZ'.
The furniture store has admitted responsibility.
The statement said: "Ikea is responsible for securing correct and compliant motifs on all our products. We can see that the process has failed regarding the product Björksta world map", a company spokesperson told the BBC. We will take necessary actions and the product is now being phased out from our stores.
It also isn't even the first Ikea map to make the mistake as the country is missing from a wall decal map in some shops, though elsewhere it appears to be included.
The timing couldn't be more awkward, with Ikea announcing plans last month to open its first store in New Zealand, in the city of Auckland.
A few weeks later, the Swedish furniture giant confirmed it will be launching a megastore in Auckland with 7000 products and a restaurant, without offering any details as to where the location will be and when it will be arriving. It has not been specified where or when it will be built. Ikea did not immediately respond to Newsweek's request for comment.

After being traded to New York, Matthews and the Knicks agreed to a contract buyout that made him a free agent Thursday. Matthews was sent to the Knicks from the Mavericks in late January as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade.
This is not the first map-related calamity to involve the land of the long white cloud.
Teaming up with Kiwi comedian Rhys Darby, the pair posted a video saying there was a "big conspiracy going down" and that they had to return the country to the world's map books.
"New Zealand, where the bloody hell are ya?"
There is an entire Reddit thread dedicated to sharing photos of maps without New Zealand.
Marketing officer Justin Flitter created a Facebook page called "Bring Ikea to New Zealand" way back in April 2009, which has over 20,000 likes.
Understandably, New Zealanders have taken to social media to vent their frustration at yet again being treated as Australia's forgotten cousin.
