French Yellow Vest Anti-Government Protests Turn Violent in Paris

Riot police clash with yellow vest protesters in Paris

A "yellow vest" demonstrator lost his hand on Saturday during clashes outside the main parliament building in Paris, witnesses said, during a 13th weekend of anti-government protests across France.

The Paris Gilet Jaunes demonstrator was left bleeding heavily as violent protests continue to grip the French capital.

Now, in their 13th consecutive week, the protests have become a sort of an uprising against the French President, Emmanuel Macron, who is seen as out of touch with common people.

A yellow vest protester was severely injured on Saturday in the streets of Paris, as police shot teargas at protesters who were trying to knock down a barrier at the French parliament.

The man, 30, was treated in hospital after a French police grenade exploded as he tried to bat it away with his hand while rioters attempted to storm the national assembly in Paris.

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner went to Twitter to express his "disgust" as protesters set alight an anti-terror military vehicle.

"We put him to one side and called the street medics".

Officers had arrested 39 people and 21 were being held in custody, they added last night. This was the 11th time he had marched with the movement, he told AFP.

The yellow vest protests began in mid-November, spurred by anger over high gas prices in rural areas where people depend on their cars because of no access to public transportation.

"The government has to come out of its virtual reality and enter the real world", said Annamaria Furlan, the head of the Italian Confederation of Workers' Trade Unions Cisl.

An injured protester is given help during a demonstration by the "yellow vests" movement in Paris, France February 9, 2019.

Thousands of protesters turned out yesterday in the French Mediterranean ports of Marseille and Montpellier and also in Bordeaux and Toulouse in the southwest - strongholds of the movements - as well as several cities in the north and west of France.

Recent polls show his approval ratings rising.
