Death toll in Istanbul building collapse rises to 21 - interior minister

Turkey building collapse death toll hits 14 - The Jakarta Post

Twenty one people died after an eight-storeyed building collapsed in Istanbul, the Turkish Interior Ministry reported on Saturday (local time).

Initial studies revealed the use of poor construction materials in the building, Kurum said as he called on citizens in the neighbourhood to report similar risks to the authorities.

The cause of Wednesday's collapse is under investigation but officials have said the top three floors of the eight-story building in the Kartal district were built illegally. Five other relatives, including two children, are among the 13 people hospitalized in the collapse.

In turn, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived at the scene, said that his country will have to learn from the incident "a large number of lessons". "Necessary steps will be made", Erdogan stated.

Seven buildings in the surrounding area were evacuated for security reasons following Wednesday's collapse.

Suleyman Soylu said Friday that rescuers were pressing ahead with efforts to reach other people trapped inside the debris.
