32nd AU summit opens in Ethiopia's capital

The leaders in attendance of the summit have witnessed the inauguration of a commemorative statue of former Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia in recognition of his contribution to Africa's liberation and unity leading up to the founding of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the AU, in 1963.

Vice President Kembo Mohadi has been appointed Acting President after President Emmerson Mnangagwa left Harare on Friday afternoon for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he will attend the 32nd Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU).

Uhuru was in Addis Ababa to attend the 32nd African Union Heads of State and Governments Summit which kicked off on January 15, 2019, and is expected to end on Monday, February 11.

"Our work must continue to improve peace and security in Africa in a holistic and sustainable manner", el- Sisi said.

The new African Union chairman said that "counter- terrorism requires the identification of those who support and finance it and combating them collectively".

"There is no doubt that you (Sisi) will take our union forward decisively to new and greater heights", the Rwandan leader said as he handed over to Egypt's president.
