Tokyo 2020 Olympic medals will be made from recycled devices

Tokyo 2020 Olympic medals will be made from electronic waste

A project, which kicked off in 2017, has been collecting electronic waste such as old smartphones, cameras and laptops to gather enough gold, silver and bronze metal for the Olympic medals.

Orgainizers for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo are in the process of collecting electronic waste in order to create medals made exclusively out of recycled material, according to numerous reports.

This creates a significant supply for collection and Olympic medal formation.

There was "huge levels of support from the public and companies across Japan and from national and global athletes", said the committee.

The target for bronze was met last June, while the organisers had more than 90% of the gold and 85% of the silver by October.

British Basketball is to get 75,000 pounds from UK Sport as a second wave of funding to help support preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the British governing body said on Friday.

By November 2018, a grand total of 47,488 tonnes of discarded devices had already been donated to Tokyo's municipal authorities, with an additional five million phones handed over by customers of a major local wireless service provider. At the Rio Olympics in 2016, recycled metals were used for medals but for less than 30 per cent of gold and silver.

In order to achieve this goal, Japan had to set targets for the amounts of each metal that it needed to collect: 5,950 pounds of bronze, 9,000 pounds of silver, and 67 pounds of gold.

"We have just begun working on systems that can connect the athletes to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) absolutely straight, transparent and quick", he added.
