Was the Fourth Hottest Year on Record in almost 140 Years

2018 was the fourth-hottest year on record

In addition, mass loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets continued to contribute to sea level rise, and increased temperatures contributed to longer and more intense fire seasons, ranging from California to Australia.

That's the fourth-highest number of billion-dollar disasters and the fourth-highest dollar amount, taking inflation into account. One of them was hail storms August 6 and 7 which hit the Rockies and high plains - the Colorado Springs Cheyenne Mountain Zoo was one casualty of those storms. Normally, the yearly NASA and NOAA announcements come out around the same time as the others', but this year's reports were delayed due to the partial US government shutdown.

Below is a statement by Brenda Ekwurzel, director of climate science and senior climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).

I'd like to get more stories like this. It's easy, if someone is skeptical to look at a hot year and say it's meaningless, we've been here before.

Americans escaped the worst of it last year though; while the rest of the planet cooked, the US experienced only its 14th-warmest year.

According to NOAA, 2018 was Arizona's second warmest year ever recorded, one of a dozen states with similarly high temperature averages.

However, scientific analysis shows that for the most recent period, between 1981 and 2018, the frequency of a new record increased to once every three years.

Last year also marked the 42nd consecutive year of global land and ocean temperatures rising above the 20th century average, with nine of the 10 warmest years on record occurring since 2005, the analysis found.

Global temperatures averaged 1.49 degrees Fahrenheit above the 1951-1980 average according to NASA data, while NOAA showed 1.42F above the 1901-2000 average. It was the 42nd consecutive year, since 1977, with an above-average global temperature.

Last year was the fourth warmest year on record and the outlook is for more sizzling heat approaching levels that most view as unsafe for humankind on the Earth, a United Nations report has shown. Both were the fourth highest on record. The damage included Hurricane Michael's $25 billion tally and $24 billion each from Hurricane Florence and the western wildfires.

It was also an expensive year for natural disasters.

But again, Abdalati cautioned against the mentality of placing a single year under the microscope to the exclusion of broader trends.

"Never mind the little wiggles from year to year". "The temperature record and sustained warmer temperatures, the data, tells the narrative. It's simply telling a story, in itself".
