Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez left off Pelosi's climate change panel

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez is the champion of both a Green New Deal and raising taxes on the richest Americans

Democratic Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY talks with reporters as she arrives for a class photo with incoming newly elected members of the U.S. House of Representatives on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., November 14, 2018.

Doug Lamborn, a Republican from Colorado, said at a climate change hearing in the House natural resources committee on Wednesday that the policy was akin to a "Soviet five-year plan". Among other absurd things, it calls for abolishing cows, nuclear energy, and airplanes, "upgrading all existing buildings in the United States", guaranteeing "high-quality health care" for all Americans, and spreading the Green New Deal to other countries.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is set to release her much-touted Green New Deal on Thursday - a package of far-reaching, big-government proposals like health care for all, federal job guarantees and a push to eliminate US carbon emissions - but it's already receiving shade from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Ocasio-Cortez was not chosen for the panel in what is widely regarded as a snub. "Quite frankly I haven't seen it, but I do know it's enthusiastic, and we welcome all the enthusiasms that are out there". House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) appeared to dismiss the plan Thursday as a "green dream".

The goals outlined in the Green New Deal respond to the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which said global temperatures must be kept less than 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels to avoid the most severe impacts of a changing climate, its authors said.

The proposal's unveiling came after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) released a list of the eight Democrats who will serve on a select climate change committee.

All of which is to say that Pelosi has this right: it's a nonsense fantasy, not a serious proposal.

Pelosi said Reps. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon, Joe Neguse of Colorado, Donald McEachin of Virginia and Sean Casten of IL will serve on the panel, along with three Californians: Julia Brownley, Jared Huffman and Mike Levin.

The freshman lawmaker and veteran Sen.

It also reportedly outlines the resolution's goals, including the creation of "millions of good, high-wage jobs" and the promotion of "justice and equity by preventing current and repairing historic oppression to frontline and vulnerable communities".

She and fellow Democrat, Rep. Ed Markey of MA, will introduce their proposal later Thursday.

The resolution paints a grim view of present-day America, saying it is "experiencing several related crises" including declining life expectancy, economic stagnation, erosion of worker bargaining power, increasing income inequality and the exacerbation of "systemic racial, regional, social, environmental and economic injustices".

Pelosi announced the plan to form the select committee last November on the same day that the newly elected Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives protested outside of the leader's personal office in Cannon - an early effort in their push for the Green New Deal. President Donald Trump has scrapped Obama's plan, which imposed emissions limits on coal-fired power plants, as a job-killer. Trump, who has expressed doubts about climate change, also is likely to oppose it.
