May considering amending Good Friday deal to break Brexit impasse

Theresa May is expected to set out plans to axe the Irish backstop from her Brexit deal with the European Union, as she shuns efforts to find a cross-party consensus and focus on winning over the DUP and rebels in her own party.

Westminster can not be allowed to hijack Brexit, says the United Kingdom's International Trade Secretary Liam Fox, in a warning to MPs who want to take more control over the country's departure from the European Union.

Speaking on the BBC, Fox said that "Parliament has not got the right to hijack the Brexit process".

Faced with the threat of a "disorderly" Brexit, opposition urged the prime minister to pledge that the United Kingdom government will not settle for a no-deal Brexit.

"We're ready to talk to the government and others in Parliament about a sensible alternative plan, but not while Theresa May is wasting 171,000 pounds (S$298,535) an hour of taxpayers' money on risky and unnecessary no-deal brinkmanship", he said in a statement.

"What we are now getting are some of those who were always absolutely opposed to the result of the referendum trying to hijack Brexit and in effect steal the result from the people".

However, May's Brexit plan was overwhelmingly rejected by both Pro-Remain and Brexiteer MPs in a historic Commons vote on Tuesday.

Britain voted with a 52 percent majority to leave the European Union in a 2016 referendum that exposed deep divisions across the country which persist nearly three years on.

But with Labour refusing to take part until May rules out no deal, some lawmakers fear those talks will change little and instead have said they will launch attempts next week to force the government to change course.

The leader of Britain's opposition Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, was expected to reiterate on Monday his willingness to talk to PM May on ways to break the deadlock over Brexit but only if she rules out a so-called no-deal Brexit scenario.

The most popular option, backed by 28% of voters, was a no-deal Brexit.

Theresa May's global trade secretary has joined his colleagues in painting a gloomy picture of the derailed Brexit consequences as the government and MPs are at loggerheads over the deal. "We are facing a national crisis and there are many MPs in the House of Commons whose first priority is to ensure we do not leave without a deal".

Former attorney general Dominic Grieve wrote in the Sunday Times: "I have made no secret of my support for the People's Vote campaign but it is important to recognise that this idea may well gain support only at the end of a process when every possible Brexit option has been explored".

Mr Blackford met with Mrs May as she held talks with other leaders after surviving a confidence vote on Wednesday, and said that he is willing to meet her again so long as the discussion focuses on three key points.

Mr Blackford told the BBC's Sunday Politics Scotland programme: "I have to say I'm frustrated with Jeremy and with Labour because I believe, if he comes on board and if the Labour front bench come on board, we can have the momentum for a people's vote".
