Senate GOP Blocks Bid To Enforce Sanctions On Putin Ally

Sanctions on Rusal Are Coming to an End Here's What It Means

The vote was 57-42, but it needed 60 yeas to end debate, and so fell short.

Congress has the power to reject any lessening of sanctions on Russian Federation, but only if it has enough votes.

The House issued a symbolic rebuke to the Trump administration on Russian Federation, overwhelmingly passing a resolution against lifting sanctions on companies tied to oligarch Oleg Deripaska, a Kremlin ally. Rusal Plc, which have all been linked to Kremlin-backed oligarch Oleg Deripaska. Deripaska accused Manafort and Rick Gates (Trump campaign's former deputy chairman) of disappearing with $26 million of his money. "The sanctions must remain in place".

Jed Shugerman, a professor at Fordham Law, told Newsweek that, although Deripaska will lose majority control of his three companies, the Treasury's plan will benefit the oligarch, and by extension, Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But the Trump administration has been pushing Republican lawmakers hard not to support the resolution of disapproval of the decision to ease the sanctions, which were introduced by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. Two of the companies taking over Deripaska's shares would be the Swiss commodities firm Glencore, which has done business with Deripaska for years and owns a small stake in the Russian oil company Rosneft, and the Russian bank VTB, which has been nicknamed Putin's piggy bank. "The companies will be subject to ongoing compliance and will face severe consequences if they fail to comply", Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin said in the department's news release.

Democrats in the Senate were hoping to be able to get enough votes to prevent these sanctions from being lifted. The 2017 bill had a veto-proof majority before it ever reached Trump's desk.

The sanctions relief, however, is set to move forward after a mandated 30-day review expires Thursday.

A resolution to oppose the Trump administration's decision to reduce sanctions against Russian Federation stalled in the Senate Wednesday, even as several Republican broke with the party's leadership to back the legislation. Susan Collins of ME, one of the Republicans who voted with Democrats, said after the first vote.

The Republicans who voted with Democrats were John Boozman and Tom Cotton of Arkansas; Susan Collins of Maine; Cory Gardner of Colorado; Steve Daines of Montana; Josh Hawley of Missouri; John Kennedy of Louisiana; Martha McSally of Arizona; Marco Rubio of Florida; Jerry Moran of Kansas; and Ben Sasse of Nebraska.

The House of Representatives will vote on a similar measure Thursday.
