Greece's Tsipras on the Brink as Confidence Vote Looms This Week

Greek defence minister

In reaction, Greece's Defence Minister Panos Kammenos resigned early January 13 and a vote of confidence in the remaining SYRIZA government is expected to be announced shortly.

Greece's 300-member parliament needs a simple majority for ratification.

The left-right governing coalition held an nearly impossibly thin majority of 153 seats in the 300-member parliament, with seven of those seats allocated to the ANEL party which is expected to disappear in the next Greek elections that must be held sometime before October.

Mr Kammenos and his party, Independent Greeks, joined Mr Tsipras left-wing Government as a junior coalition partner despite being a right-wing nationalist force, in 2015.

Greek polls suggest opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis's New Democracy party would win the most votes if elections were held now, though it's unclear whether he'd be able to form a government without needing allies in parliament. In one freakish case, it can mean membership in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

The future of the ruling coalition government remains unclear.

Macedonian lawmakers voted late on Friday to rename their country the Republic of North Macedonia but the agreement now needs backing from the Greek parliament to come into effect.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Sunday said he would call a confidence vote in his government after his coalition ally quit, leaving him bereft of a parliamentary majority and raising the possibility of snap elections.

It came after three days of negotiations between Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and lawmakers that opposed the changes. Neither one has stated their position on the confidence motion but Kokkalis has said he will vote against the Macedonian name change. In a press conference later that same day, Kammenos was highly critical of the non-democratic tactics PM Zaev had used in Skopje for the last several months to get the 81 votes required to pass the constitutional amendments.

"Our parliament found the strength but it wasn't easy".

Greece frustrated Macedonia's aspirations to European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ties over the name dispute. "But I am convinced that the Greek parliament will also find the strength to make the decision", he said. For the Greeks, Macedonia is significant as the cradle of Alexander the Great's empire.

Meanwhile, ahead of the vote in Athens, two news websites alleged that a prominent member of Greece's main opposition New Democracy party - which rejects the name deal - called on its members to phone lawmakers of the ANEL party and urge them to vote against the agreement.

Kommersant estimates that the adoption of constitutional changes can have another outcome, important not only for that Balkan state, adding that "in the opinion of regional experts, this can influence the granting of autocephaly to the Macedonian Orthodox Church".
