PC leader Lenovo faces pressure from HP and Dell in Asia Pacific

Gartner: Not a very merry Christmas for PC market as chip shortage bites, small biz vanishes

-China trade war could make things worse.

However, Lenovo seems to be an exception as the overall market has been stagnant. The Japan region, however, helped all the major OEMs to mark growth. The report was published by Gartner earlier today which noted a significant drop in the shipments.

PC shipments in Emea totalled 20.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2018, a 3.8% decline year over year.

This marks the seventh consecutive year marking global PC shipment decline - 2018 saw 259.4 million units shipped, a 1.3 percent decrease from last year.

Mac shipments themselves declined 3.8 percents over Q4 and declined 2.1 percent over the year. The company captured the market of 15.7 percent in the fourth quarter. Dell, sitting in third, also saw its shipments grow during the quarter. Consumer shipments accounted for approximately 40 percent of PC shipments in 2018 compared with 49 percent in 2014. Lastly, Apple retained the same fourth position with year-on-year growth of -3.8 percent, and Acer obtained the fifth position.

Both firms point to a shortage of CPUs and mounting trade tensions between the USA and China as causes for the decline.

Gartner analysts said there were signs for optimism in 2018, but the industry was impacted by two key trends.

"The ongoing economic tensions between China and the United States continue to create a lot of uncertainty in the business environment in China", IDC Research Manager Maciek Gornicki said in a statement.

ZDNet, on the other hand, lays the blame on the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China.

Lenovo surpassed HP Inc. and moved into the No. 1 spot in the global PC market in the last quarter of 2018. HP came on second with 22.4% of the market and was followed by Dell at 15.9% market share.

IDC, which ranked the top four PC makers in the same order, recorded similar shipping and market share figures. As a result of the CPU bottleneck, the provider would not be able to meet the rise in demand, especially in the case of enterprise customers in many ways, said Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa.

Regarding the shaky state of world affairs, Kitagawa remarked: "There was even uncertainty in the US - where the overall economy has been strong - among vulnerable buyer groups, such as small and midsize businesses (SMBs)".
