Ocean Temperatures Rising Faster Than Previously Thought

Oceans heating up faster than expected, set record in 2018

The new study analyzed earlier published information and data compiled by Argo, an global system of almost 4,000 floats that measures temperature and saline levels in the upper parts of the world's oceans.

The seas are warming much faster than previously feared, warns new research.

During the study, researchers used the data collected by a high-tech ocean observing system named Argo, which comprises an worldwide network of robotic floats that regularly monitor the salinity and temperature of ocean water.

'For example, even if we meet the target of Paris Agreement (to limit climate change), ocean will continue warming and sea level will continue rise. Researchers said this showed that, contrary to the claims of some sceptics, the world was warming at a...

"The ocean is the memory of climate change, along with melted ice, and 93% of the Earth's energy imbalance ends up in the ocean", said study co-author Kevin Trenberth, part of the Climate Analysis Section at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research.

Moreover, the revised and updated ocean heat content record is much more in step with the warming predicted by climate models, thereby providing much more confidence in expectations for the future.

The system uses nearly 4,000 drifting ocean robots that dive to a depth of 2,000 metres every few days, recording temperature and other indicators as they float back to the surface. In reality, the oceans' temperature, at waters down to 2,000 meters, reached a 0.1 degrees Celsius increase between 1975 and 2010. That would mean a sea level rise of 30 centimeters or about a foot in addition to the rise in sea levels caused by melting of glaciers and ice sheets. "Global warming is close to ocean warming, and 2018 will be the warmest year on record, followed by 2017, then 2015". US President Donald Trump, who wants to promote US fossil fuels, plans to pull out of the pact in 2020. The 2013 United Nations assessment estimated slower rates of heat uptake but did not give a single comparable number. In the past 150 years, the world's oceans would be the equivalent of about a thousand times the amount of the annual world energy consumption of heat is absorbed, so the result of the beginning of January, in the journal "PNAS" calculation. It can take more than 1,000 years for deep ocean temperatures to adjust to changes at the surface. In addition, the warming of sea water leads to a further destruction of the coral reefs and reduces the oxygen content in the oceans.

Ocean temperatures are less influenced by year-to-year variations in the weather.

Through the data collected, scientists have documented increases in rainfall intensity and more powerful storms such as hurricanes Harvey in 2017 and Florence in 2018.

A warmer ocean causes sea level to rise, bringing problems like unsafe coastal flooding.
