Toyota Wants 1.7 Million Vehicles Back Because Airbags Are ‘Potentially Deadly’

A week ago, Ford Motor Co stated that it was recalling 953,000 vehicles worldwide for Takata inflators.

The recall involves Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles manufactured between 2003 and 2013 that are equipped with Takata front passenger airbag inflators.

It's one of the largest automotive recalls in US history, according to the Associated Press.

According to USA Today, the airbag inflators could explode on deployment and send shrapnel at passengers. Also included is the Scion XB, 2010 through 2015.

Vehicle owners who are affected by the recall will be notified via mail in January. In areas of high heat and humidity, the risk of rupture may arise between 6 and 9 years.

Other automakers are scheduled to replace 10 million Takata airbags beginning this month.

The Associated Press says Toyota and Lexus dealers either replace the inflator or the entire air bag assembly with equipment made by other manufacturers that does not contain ammonium nitrate, which can deteriorate over time due to high humidity and cycles from hot temperatures to cold.

Ford and Honda have already announced Takata airbag recalls.

The report says 16.7 million faulty inflators out of 50 million under recall have yet to be fixed.

The recalls forced Takata of Japan to seek bankruptcy protection and sell most of its assets to pay for the fixes.

The Takata airbag recall has impacted most auto manufacturers around the world. Both automakers have urged some drivers of older vehicles not to drive them until the inflators are replaced.

Toyota has a search tool on its website where owners can either type in their license plate number or VIN or they can select the model and year of their vehicle to search whether they're impacted by the recall.
