Three dead in double-decker bus crash in Ottawa

A bus crash at Westboro Station in Ottawa

A double decker bus ripped open when it struck a bus shelter in the Canadian capital on Friday, killing three people and injuring at least 23, officials said.

Several people have been injured in a collision involving an OC Transpo bus at Westboro station, police say.

The incident took place around 3:50 p.m. local time.

1310 NEWS' Mark Sutcliffe is set to host two hours of special programming, following a devastating bus crash at Westboro Station. The Ottawa Hospital confirmed on Twitter that it had received nine patients in critical condition from the crash.

The vehicle apparently jumped the curb as it approached the station and plowed along the platform, where the roof of a shelter carved deep into the vehicle's second deck.

Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Danielle Cardinal said as of 4:10 p.m. that the Transitway was closed in both directions near Westboro station.

"There's no question that the weather adds complexity at the scene", said Bordeleau. Another was wheeled on a gurney in obvious distress, wailing loudly enough to be heard on an overpass above.

The investigation will take a long time and likely would mean the closure of the busway and nearby roads for at least many hours, Bordeleau said.

People are being asked to avoid the area as crews help those who have been injured.

Buses were being detoured as a result of the accident, OC Transpo said.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford took it to Twitter to send a message to the victims and their families.

Photos and video from the scene showed emergency responders treating a number of people on the ground, as others used ladders to unload passengers trapped on the bus' upper level.
