Megyn Kelly officially leaves NBC with reported $30 million payout

Megyn Kelly parts ways with NBC, receives rest of contract

Kelly is just halfway through her three-year contract, but NBC has agreed to pay her the remainder of the money, believed to be close to $30 million, according to the network.

The network announced the split in a statement late Friday, saying both parties "have resolved their differences, and Megyn Kelly is no longer an employee of NBC".

Her comments that drew outrage on social media and condemnations from Kelly's colleagues at NBC, including Craig Melvin and Al Roker, and was covered by Lester Holt on NBC Nightly News. Kelly asked her guests.

The 48-year-old television personality parted ways with the network following her controversial discussion of blackface worn for Halloween costumes.

Later that day, Kelly apologized to NBC staff in a memo, which was then criticized by Al Roker during the first hour of Today on October 24. She delivered a tearful mea culpa to fans the next day, but three days later, NBC announced that Megyn Kelly Today had been canceled.

But tough segments on accusations against former NBC anchor Matt Lauer didn't win her friends internally, as did her public call for Lack to appoint outside investigators to look into why the network didn't air Ronan Farrow's stories about Harvey Weinstein and allowed Farrow to take his story to The New Yorker. And "Megyn Kelly Today" was defined by disappointing ratings and awkward moments, with the host sometimes seeming ill-suited for the bubbly world of morning television.

"But what is racist?" she wondered aloud.

"You truly do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface at Halloween or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween", she added.

Critics accused her of ignoring the ugly history of minstrel shows and movies in which whites applied blackface to mock blacks.

Kelly will be subject to an industry standard nondisparagement clause, limiting what she can say about her time at NBC and her interactions with NBC executives.

The backlash to Kelly was swift and immediate, exceeding the outrage she generated for her remarks years ago about Santa's race.
