Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and wife MacKenzie announce divorce on Twitter

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos with wife Mac Kenzie Bezos

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, are divorcing, ending a 25-year marriage that played a role in the creation of an e-commerce company that made Bezos one of the world's wealthiest people. "If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again", wrote Jeff.

Tabloid newspaper Enquirer tweeted that it had planned to expose the real reason behind the split.

Bezos founded Amazon one year after they married in 1993, which means MacKenzie could end up with roughly $69 million from her now-estranged husband's fortune.

Divorce attorney experts told CNBC that MacKenzie would most likely not want to impact her ex's ownership stake because it would ultimately affect the growth of the Bezos family fortune.

They first met at a New York City hedge fund where they both worked in 1992, and married six months later.

The 48-year-old MacKenzie Bezos is a novelist, the author of The Testing of Luther Albright (2005) and Traps (2013).

Candy recalled for possible hepatitis A contamination
Hepatitis A can cause liver failure and even death, typically in those who are 50 years of age or older, though that's rare. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted customers to a possible hepatitis A contamination of Bauer's Candies Modjeskas.

Bezos and MacKenzie have been married for almost 25 years, which means they together built Amazon as well as other assets.

The divorce could reshape the wealth rankings.

Theoretically, if MacKenzie got half of Bezos' worth, he would drop to being the fifth-richest person in the world, while she would immediately become the richest woman in the world. It could also make Microsoft Corp.co-founder Bill Gates, now worth $92.5 billion, the planet's richest person once again.

Washington State, where the Bezoses live, is a "community property" state, meaning that all property and debt acquired during a marriage is subject to a 50-50 split at the time of a divorce, if the couple can't negotiate an agreement on their own. The couple quit their jobs in 1994 and moved to Seattle, Washington. They expanded operations into a two-bedroom house, equipped with three Sun Microstation, and eventually developed a test site.

Washington state also mandates a 90-day cooling off period between the day a couple initially files for divorce, and the soonest it can be finalized by a judge. "She had told Patrick that she has been recently seeing Jeff Bezos". The duo also have significant interests in the company and various stakes.

It is unlikely that many details of the divorce will become public, NY lawyer Bernard Clair, who is representing Judith Giuliani in her divorce from former NY mayor Rudy Giuliani, said.
