Woman Suffers Rare Medical Condition Rendering her Unable to Hear Men's Voices

A woman can’t hear men due to rare medical condition Posted

Before she went to bed, the woman says she heard ringing in her ears and vomited.

In a freakish situation, a Chinese woman has been diagnosed with a type of hearing loss in which she is unable to hear the voices of men and can only higher frequency tones of other females.

According to the Daily Mail, the woman is only being identified as Ms. Chen.

The World Health Organization says that about 466 million people around the globe suffer from some form of hearing loss. After Dr. Lin Xiaoqing checked out her symptoms, she was able to identify that she could not hear deeper voices due to their lower frequencies.

Newsweek explains: "Genetic condition including Mondini dysplasia-where the cochlea is incomplete-can cause reverse-sloping hearing loss, as well as diseases which affect the hair cells in the inner ear, like Ménière's".

This condition hinders Chen's ability to hear low frequency sounds, such as the average grown man's voice.

Bizarre Ear Condition Makes Woman Unable to Hear Men's Voices

To clarify, the woman can only hear voices belonging to other women.

While Ms. Chen was able to hear every word a female ENT said during her appointment, she was unable to pick up on the voice of a young male patient at the hospital, Dr. Xiaoqing said.

What is reverse-slope hearing loss (RSHL)?

The ear, nose and throat specialist said that she expected Ms Chen to make a full recovery. It can affect one in almost 13,000 patients with hearing problems.

High-frequency hearing loss, where sufferers are unable to hear the voices of women or children, is more common.

If you haven't heard of it (and we hadn't either) it's called reverse-sloping hearing loss because of the shape of a hearing test audiogram of those who can't hear low frequencies - it looks the opposite of a ski slope, starting in the lower-left-hand corner and sloping upward steeply. This can put them in danger, as they may not hear low noises like oncoming cars. A range of factors can cause hearing loss, including hereditary diseases, infections, certain drugs, aging, and exposure to loud noises.
