Tragic Accident in Eastern Cuba, Tourists and Cubans Dead or Injured

There were 750 deaths and 7,999 injuries in 11,187 accidents last year in the country of 11 million

Two Britons were among those injured when a bus crashed in Cuba, killing seven people, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

Five people, including two tourists, were critically injured.

The driver told Radio Guantanamo he lost control on the wet and winding road, Le Herradura, which has one of the highest accident rates on the Guantanamo Baracoa highway.

The crash - which took place at around 8pm on Thursday (3pm local time) - happened in a south-eastern city of Guantánamo, around 1,000 miles away from the capital Havana. The tourists are reported to be from Holland, Great Britain, France, Mexico, and of course Canada.

The names and nationalities of those killed haven't yet been released.

This is the fourth major bus accident in Cuba in a month and the nation's roads are known to be lacking in light, narrow and often poorly maintained. A year ago in all of Cuba there were over 11,000 auto accidents on their poorly-conditioned highways.

However, reports from Cuba indicate that the bus was carrying 18 locals and 22 tourists.

A spokeswoman said: "We continue to seek further information from the Cuban authorities following a road traffic accident, and are ready to assist any British people who require our help".

According to state media, 33 injured passengers arrived at a hospital in Guantánamo for treatment.
