US, China hold more trade talks overshadowed by Kim visit

Washington "cannot push China too far" and must avoid a situation that "spins out of control".

President Donald Trump has said on Twitter that the talks are "going very well".

A statement released by China's Commerce Ministry on Thursday morning said both sides carried out "wide, deep and thorough exchanges" on trade and structural issues of mutual concern. -Chinese relations for years.

Beijing has tried to defuse pressure for more sweeping change by offering concessions including purchasing more American soybeans, natural gas and other exports.

"The talks also focused on China's pledge to purchase a substantial amount of agricultural, energy, manufactured goods, and other products and services from the United States", the statement, released by the Office of the US Trade Representative, said.

The current trade round coincided with an unannounced visit from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for talks with Xi, ahead of a possible second meeting between Kim and Trump.

"The U.S. feels uncomfortable with China's rapid development, and can't adapt to its own declining influence", wrote Chen Yonglong in the state-run China Daily".

Speaking at a daily news briefing in Beijing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang confirmed both sides had agreed to extend the talks beyond Monday and Tuesday as originally scheduled.

The Global Times commentary said China's growing economy means it can "carry out a more intense boycott" of trade with the United States if needed.

Beijing's growing commercial and political ties with its neighbours will make it harder for Washington to find "Asian countries willing to stand at its side and help contain China", the newspaper said.
