AMD 7nm Ryzen 3rd Generation processors will come mid

AMD 7nm Vega GPU

At AMD's first ever CES keynote Lisa Su has once more professed the red team's love for gamers by unveiling the "world's first 7nm gaming GPU" the Radeon VII graphics card - the next generation of AMD high-performance graphics silicon.

The GPU landscape is more nebulous, though the introduction of Radeon VII is a left-field move that could cause a problem for the high-end RTX GPUs: we have only another month to find out for ourselves. While we all had assumed (based on the logo trademark) that it would be called Radeon Vega II, it is in fact called Radeon VII.

Lisa Su hyped up the crowd a bit before announcing a preview of the third-generation Ryzen desktop processors. "Radeon VII has better performance in some of the latest Vulkan games like "Strange Brigade" and is very competitive at both DX11 and DX 12 games". The Vega 10 is built on GlobalFoundries' 14nm process; the Vega 20 is built on TSMC's 7nm process. We assume that marks the boost clock of the gaming GPU, but that is still some 300MHz quicker than the boost clocks of the RX Vega 64. With price parity against the RTX 2080, AMD is clearly angling to challenge that chip, but we won't know how effective that challenge will be until we have hardware in-house.

The AMD Radeon VII comes with 60 compute units running up to 1.8Ghz, will provide 25% more performance at the same power, and will offer 1TB/sec memory bandwidth.

1MDB scandal: China denies it offered to bail out Malaysian fund
According to the Journal, Low, who is accused of laundering money through real estate in NY and Los Angeles, is hiding in China. China's foreign ministry has previously denied money from its infrastructure program was used to bail out 1MDB, it said.

On the laptop front, AMD said on stage that it was focusing its efforts on students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. Content creators can expect to see a 30 per cent boost in performance over the RX Vega 64 in content creation workloads like Blender and up to 60 per cent for OpenCL, while gamers see increases of 25 to 42 per cent increases over the RX Vega 64 in 4K gaming.

AMD were also keen to emphasise that their 3rd Gen Ryzen CPUs will be the first PC platform to support the super fast PCIe 4.0 standard, letting it take advantage of some of the faster graphics cards (hello Radeon 7) and devices that are coming out this year.

Another big of good news is Ryzen 3rd Generation is sticking to the same AM4 socket, so its new CPUs will work with existing 300 and 400-series AMD motherboards.
