Alien proof: Radio signals discovered in deep space

Scientists Find 13 Mysterious Deep Space Flashes Including 2nd Known'Repeater

The findings were announced by Deborah Good, an astronomer at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Washington on Wednesday. The project wasn't yet living up to its full potential, suggesting that there are plenty more bursts to be discovered.

She added that with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) telescope "mapping the entire northern hemisphere every day, we're bound to find more repeaters over time".

The latest signals to be detected reached Earth from a galaxy 1.5 billion light years away.

Like the previous repeater, detected in 2012, CHIME's FRB rules out the possibility that the bursts are coming from "cataclysmic events".

The CHIME telescope found, as phrased by Nature.com, "the second known FRB that repeats, meaning that the radio flashes re-appear at the same point in the sky".

"By detecting and characterizing fast radio bursts at different frequencies, we can understand better which theories work and which do not", post-doctoral fellow at McGill University, Shriharsh Tendulkar, told Cnet.

Radio signals coming from a distant galaxy in outer space have been detected by a telescope in Canada.

Federer: Djokovic the clear favourite for the Australian Open
As Australian Open champion Roger Federer prepares to defend his title again at Melbourne Park, he is full of emotion. Federer expressed his love for the Australian tennis calendar, as there is much that connects him to the country.

"An FRB emitted from a merger of two neutron stars, or a neutron star and a black hole, for example, can not repeat".

Of more than 60 FRBs detected to date, such repeating bursts have only been picked up once before, by the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico in 2015. Seeing a signal at all indicates something big, like a black hole collision, could be the cause.

Fast radio bursts have been speculated to be the result of everything from exploding stars to transmissions from aliens.

The team - who have been specifically looking for FRBs - also noted that all of the new signals observed have been under 800 MHz, which is much lower than the previously detected frequencies, which hovered around the 1,400 MHz area.

The CHIME team, which designed and built the telescope, includes 14 scientists from the University of B.C. alongside others from McGill University, the University of Toronto, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the National Research Council of Canada.

The low frequency of this new detection could mean that the source of the bursts differ. "The closest analogs we have in our own galaxies (pulsars) are more than a trillion times fainter", Tendulkar said about the repeating FRB.

Constructed in British Columbia, CHIME is composed of 4, 100-meter long half-pipe cylinders of metal mesh which reconstruct images of the sky by processing the radio signals recorded by more than a thousand antennas. Some scientists had anxious that the range of frequencies it can pick up would be too low for it to receive the FRBs - but it found far more than expected, and scientists expect it to identify even more. "We haven't solved the problem, but it's several more pieces in the puzzle". "But it has to be in some special place tog I've us all the scattering that we see".
