Report says Quebec woman missing in Burkina Faso may have been kidnapped

By Canadian Press

The pair were last seen in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso, in the country's southwest, and had planned to drive to the capital of Ouagadougou before crossing into neighbouring Togo, the family said.

Local media reports said Blais traveled to the West African country via Europe with a friend, Lucas Tacchetto, a 30-year-old from Venice.

The pair were supposed to travel by vehicle to Togo for a humanitarian aid project with Zion'Gaia, an environmentally oriented group that engages in reforestation projects, according to its website. They were having a really happy trip.

"At first we gave her a little slack, telling ourselves 'she's a traveller, she's a bit bohemian, ' and it's possible that she just didn't give us news for a few days", Bergeron Blais said.

The travellers were expected to stay in Ouagadougou for four or five days, and possibly sell their vehicle before moving on to Togo.

Meantime, Blais' family has started a Facebook page related to the disappearance, and they say they are grateful for the help they've received so far.

No one has heard from a Quebec woman who went to Burkina Faso since December 15 and now Global Affairs Canada is trying to figure out what happened to her.

Burkina Faso is known to be a risky place for foreigners.

On its travelers' site, the Canadian government recommends avoiding all non-essential travel to Burkina Faso because of the imminent terrorist threat. Kristian Baxter, a 44-year-old from Nanaimo, B.C. who visited Syria to visit his girlfriend's brother-in-law, has been detained for more than a month over issues with a metal detector in his luggage, according to his mother.

The Canadian government has been notified and Interpol will be launching an inquiry. Canada cut off diplomatic relations with Syria in 2012.

"They are there to remind Canadians to avoid going to these places where you will be, to a large degree, on your own if you're captured", he told CTV News.
