Elizabeth Warren Asked About Why She Took DNA Test at Iowa Event

Sen. Elizabeth Warren D-Mass addresses an overflow crowd outside an organizing event at McCoy’s Bar Patio and Grill in Council Bluffs Iowa Friday Jan. 4 2019

Warren had several subsequent opportunities in the 1990s to correct the record and clarify that she is "not a person of color", but took no action then either.

What did the DNA test results show?

For Warren, virtually every position she advocated was, in policy terms, a repudiation of the president and the course he has set for the nation in his first two years.

There are a whopping 666 days to go until the 2020 presidential election, but potential candidate Elizabeth Warren was in Iowa this weekend and faced a question on the subject of her claim to Cherokee ancestry: "Why did you undergo the DNA testing and give Donald Trump more fodder to be a bully?" asked the first questioner on Saturday, per USA Today. "Let me say something about this fight".

"I've got three brothers, and one's a Democrat", Warren said, in Sioux City Saturday morning, holding for laughs.

While Warren may have been attempting to be relatable like her young Democratic colleagues - notably Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and failed Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke - instead the moment lead to mockery and questions about Warren's "likability".

Warren's critiques of Wall Street's political influence struck a chord with numerous Iowans who came to see her, 13 months ahead of the Iowa caucuses that formally kick off the nomination race.

Elizabeth Warren, her voice raspy from a cold and her eyes twinkling, feigned impassivity.

Rashida Tlaib: Only Sorry Calling Trump 'Motherf**ker' Became 'Distraction'
We're as angry and upset as everybody else is passionate, but however, we have a course that we have to stick to, and nothing I should say should distract us from that.

Democratic 2020 USA presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren speaks during an event in Des Moines, Iowa.

Warren also took pains to broaden what Democrats and other voters may know of her biography, beyond her representation of a strongly liberal state. "We need to call it out for what it is: It is corruption, pure and simple". "I'm not a citizen of a tribe. I genuinely am and I'm glad for us to have a chance to talk about it", Warren started out in her response.

"Across Iowa and then across America", Warren told a crowd of about 500 in Council Bluffs. "Tribes-and only tribes-determine tribal citizenship, and I respect that difference" between ancestry and citizenship. "Too much time with little people, so I will try my best to croak", Warren told the crowd.

Warren also defended her decision to "prove" her Native American ancestry, adding that she just wanted to "put it all out there", even though the DNA test showed Warren was likely only 1/1024 Native American (and even that is an estimate).

She aimed directly at voters tempted by President Donald Trump's angry populism in 2016 but avoided mentions of Trump himself nearly entirely. He is a self-described "centrist" who has vocally supported Clinton, which may suggest that his battle for the nomination against the "outsider" Warren might end up repeating some familiar themes from the 2016 primaries. But if they were hoping to hear one of the president's most prominent critics rip into him, they would have been disappointed: Warren pushed back against numerous aspects of his governance but rarely mentioned the president by name. The minimum wage should be able to keep a working family afloat, she said, and students shouldn't be burdened with $1.5 trillion in loan debt.

Her route across the state includes stops in deep blue Polk County, as well as events in western and rural Iowa where Republicans substantially outnumber Democrats.

So now, instead of talking about Trump, Warren, in the very early going, has focused on introducing herself anew to voters. "After a couple of years of Trump, we're ready to just say what we believe".
