New NASA lander captures 1st sounds of Martian wind

InSight is designed to study the interior of Mars like never before using seismology instruments to detect quakes and a self-hammering mole to measure heat escape from the planet's crust

These instruments will be the first ever to be robotically placed on the surface of another planet. Additionally, NASA reported that the winds were likely blowing from the northwest in the direction of the southeast, the way the streaks in the landing area seem to move as well. The craft will stay put until November 24, 2020, measuring quakes that happen anywhere on Mars.

To get high-quality data from the incredibly sensitive seismometer onboard the lander, the team needs to be able to cancel out all the commotion coming from the Martian surface, looking only at signals coming from inside the planet.

The sound of wind is easily recognizable to most people on Earth but for the first time the sound of wind on Mars has been released. NASA Administrator, Jim Bridenstine, shared a video about the new audio to Twitter Friday.

NASA's new Mars lander has captured the first sounds of the Martian wind.

The noise is of the wind blowing against InSight's solar panels and the resulting vibration of the entire spacecraft. We provide the original audio and a version pitched up by two octaves to make them audible on mobile devices.

InSight's seismometer and another sensor picked up the noise, and it was not planned.

Australia OKs Controversial Anti-Encryption Law
They are also concerned about how the law's secrecy provisions will impact their business models and consumer privacy. The legislation could force companies such as Facebook and Google to help decrypt such private communications.

Less than two weeks into the InSight Mission, UK science is already uncovering incredible things about Mars.

"Capturing this audio was an unplanned treat", said Bruce Banerdt, the InSight principal investigator at Nasa's lab in Pasadena, California.

"We're all still on a high from the landing last week. and here we are less than two weeks after landing, and we've already got some unbelievable new science", said NASA's Lori Glaze, acting director of planetary science.

The sounds were recorded by an air pressure sensor inside the lander that's part of a weather station, as well as the seismometer on the deck of the spacecraft. When InSight is conducting its science mission, the seismometer won't be able to hear the wind, attuned only to the grumblings of the planet's interior.

The solar panels on the lander's sides are ideal acoustic receivers. One is set to record the sound of landing on the Red Planet and the other will listen for the sounds made by a laser used to investigate materials on the surface.
