Aston Martin creates 'reversible' EV conversion for classic cars

Aston's EV conversion preserves heritage (and the planet)

Aston Martin Works, the auto maker's historic arm, will create a reversible EV powertrain conversion for its classic models.

Created for a world where future legislation could restrict the use of classic cars, the concept has a "cassette" electric powertrain which uses some of the same technology as the upcoming Rapide E. The only cosmetic change is a touchscreen that's been "discreetly fitted" into the cabin to monitor the power outlay.

To showcase the concept, the team carried out the conversion on an original 1970 DB6 MkII Volante, whereby the cassette is enclosed within its own self-contained cell. Talk about going full circle.

The British automaker has developed an EV conversion solution compatible with the firm's heritage models.

According to the sports auto maker, the DB6's new all-electric powertrain is housed within a self-contained cassette, which is placed on the original engine and gearbox mountings.

Julian Assange: Ecuador president reveals 'PATH' for Wikileaks founder to leave embassy
In March, he accused the embassy of violating his " fundamental rights and freedoms " by restricting his internet access. The investigation was later dropped, but the UK Government said he will be arrested if he leaves the embassy .

Aston Martin appears to understand that classic auto collectors are a finicky bunch, concerned with the "integrity" of the original vehicle, so this cassette system is fully removable if the owner wants the original powertrain back.

Aston Martin is built on a rich history, so it'll be keen to make sure its classic cars aren't consigned to museum halls and climate-controlled garages.

"We are very aware of the environmental and social pressures that threaten to restrict the use of classic cars in the years to come", Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer says. The original powertrain can be added back in after conversion if desired.

"Our Second Century Plan not only encompasses our new and future models, but also protects our treasured heritage. Driving a classic Aston Martin on pure EV power is a unique experience and one that will no doubt be extremely attractive to many owners, especially those who live in city centres".

The company expects to begin offering conversions to customers in 2019.
