SouthWest Airlines plane skids off runway at Burbank airport

Southwest Jet Bellies To A Stop After Skidding Off Rainy Runway

Flights from other airlines were continuing to depart from Burbank.

A Southwest Airlines plane rolled off the end of a runway at the Hollywood Burbank Airport during a heavy rain while landing Thursday morning, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Passenger Moe Storch tweeted the Southwest plane from Oakland to Burbank appeared to hydroplane after it landed on the wet runway. The accident happened during a heavy downpour, the Los Angeles Times reported. "We encourage Customers traveling via BUR today to check their flight status via Southwest.com", the airline said in a statement to KPIX 5.

The jet's skid was stopped thanks to a little-known safety system called Engineered Materials Arresting System. "But as we saw in Burbank today, it can make a really big difference", said Doug Yakel, a spokesperson for SFO. Yakel says they could not lengthen those runways because they're bookend by the bay and Highway 101.

Men Charged in Panama Papers Investigation
Prosecutors allege Mr Owens and Mr Brauer created and ran sham foundations and shell companies to hide assets. Richard Gaffey, a US -based accountant, was arrested in MA on Tuesday, according to prosecutors.

The jet was stopped by the airport's Engineered Material Arresting System, which is created to stop an aircraft that goes off the end of a runway.

EMAS is a safety system created to stop an aircraft if it goes off the end of a runway. The crushable concrete surface was installed after that accident.

Flight 278, a Boeing 737-700 that originated in Oakland, was landing in Burbank shortly after 9 a.m. when it slid off the runway and came to a stop after hitting a barrier created to catch airplanes that leave the runway, according to an FAA spokesman.
