Richard Sherman slams Redskins for not calling on Colin Kaepernick

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick hasn't played since the 2016 season. File

The Washington Redskins "discussed" signing quarterback Colin Kaepernick but chose to go in a "different direction", says head coach Jay Gruden. The Redskins are bringing in two free agent quarterbacks for a workout late Tuesday afternoon, and will compare them to the group that worked out after Alex Smith suffered a season-ending leg injury November 18 against the Texans.

The Redskins signed Mark Sanchez in November and he is now the only QB on the roster.

"He's been discussed for sure", Gruden said of Kaepernick.

"I think you probably have to be a little bit more simplistic in your approach, but you still can challenge the defense in different ways", Gruden said.

Washington reportedly is setting its sights on another former San Francisco quarterback to backup Sanchez.

The Redskins signed Sanchez in part because their passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell played with him in NY.

Red Wings’ Bertuzzi Benched For 2 Games For Punch From The Bench
The 23-year-old Detroit forward chose to take the opportunity to shed a glove and deliver a bare-knuckle cheap shot. It's regarded as one of the ugliest incidents in league history and Moore never played a game in the NHL again.

The Redskins also worked out quarterbacks before signing Sanchez after Smith's injury. He's hoping to give the 2018 Redskins team a similar end of season run, starting with practice this week. He said if it had been Week 1 of the season, Kaepernick would have been a better possibility of joining the team.

Sanchez had only about 20 percent of the Redskins' playbook at his disposal when he replaced McCoy on Monday night.

He was the first player to kneel during the U.S. national anthem. He threw an interception and fumbled once, though he recovered the ball. He underwent surgery to fix his fibula Tuesday. The Redskins are 6-6 and have lost four of their past five games.

Sanchez took that team to the AFC Championship game where they lost to the one-seeded (and Peyton Manning-led) Colts. His collusion grievance, as well as his position on kneeling during the anthem to protest social injustice, is going to continue to keep him from getting a job in the NFL.

Several owners, coaches and team executives have been called to testify, and the case is scheduled to go to trial.
