Philadelphia Phillies adding Jean Segura could help bring in additional talent

Two-time All Star Jean Segura is the rumored next Mariners player to be traded

Landing Segura before the MLB Winter Meetings begin next week would be an advantage for the Phillies, as it would allow them to head into the annual meetings with one key piece already acquired - and another selling point to other free agents.

The Phillies traded Santana and shortstop J.P. Crawford to the Mariners on Monday for shortstop Jean Segura, right-handed reliever Juan Nicasio and left-handed reliever James Pazos.

The trade was later confirmed by Bob Nightengale of the United States of America today that the deal had been agreed to in principle.

Segura is a two-time All-Star who began his career with the Angels, before playing in Milwaukee, Arizona, and finally Seattle. He ranked sixth in the American League in hits (178) and seventh in batting average last season, while also leading the majors in three-hit games (20).

Santana, 32, hit.229 with 24 home runs, 86 RBIs and a.766 OPS in 2018, his first season with Philadelphia after eight years with Cleveland.

Segura, 28, will be an upgrade for the Phillies in the infield. Shortstop was a revolving door previous year and Segura solves the problem.

In time, don't be surprised if acquiring Segura is just the beginning of what should be an exciting offseason for the Phillies.

Crawford, 23, hit.214 with three homers and 12 RBIs over 49 games last season with the Phillies. The 26-year-old has expressed an interest to stay at shortstop, though his top-two suitors would likely have plans to play him at third base for the next several years.

MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal reported Sunday that the Phillies are in serious talks about a Jean Segura trade as the Mariners plan their next move after a trade sending Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz to the Mets becomes official.
