Julian Assange: Ecuador president reveals 'PATH' for Wikileaks founder to leave embassy

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange speaks on the balcony of the Embassy of Ecuador in London

The investigation was later dropped, but the UK Government said he will be arrested if he leaves the embassy.

Ecuador also issues a nine-page memo which informed Assange that he must refrain from making political statements and clean the bathroom in the embassy.

Ecuador's president has ramped up pressure on Julian Assange to leave his country's embassy in London, saying Britain has provided sufficient guarantees that the WikiLeaks founder won't be extradited to face the death penalty overseas.

'The way has been cleared for Mr Assange to take the decision to leave in near-liberty, ' President Lenin Moreno told reporters on Thursday.

Mr Moreno said today that Mr Assange still faces jail time in Britain for violating bail terms when he sought sanctuary to avoid extradition to Sweden so authorities could quiz him as part of a sexual assault investigation.

Lenin Moreno's comments suggest that months of quiet diplomacy between the United Kingdom and Ecuador to resolve Assange's situation is bearing fruit at a time when questions are swirling about the former Australian hacker's legal fate in the US.

In November, WikiLeaks suggested that the U.S. authorities might have brought sealed charges against Assange, citing a filing in an unrelated case that used Assange's name in an "apparent cut-and-paste error".

Ecuador's foreign minister Jose Valencia said at the time that Britain was merely asking him to appear in court to answer for having broken his bail conditions, and that he was likely to get a sentence of no more than six months.

Assange has long maintained the he faces charges under seal in the U.S for revealing highly sensitive government information on his website.

In March, he accused the embassy of violating his "fundamental rights and freedoms" by restricting his internet access.

United States prosecutors last month inadvertently revealed the existence of a sealed indictment against Assange, according to WikiLeaks, but it was not known what the actual charges were.

Mr Assange has denied any connection to Russian Federation.
