Turkey seeks arrest of Saudi crown prince allies over Khashoggi

Khashoggi murder: CIA chief Haspel 'to brief Congress'

Other Republicans who last week had opposed a resolution directing the president to halt USA support of the Saudi war in Yemen now suggested they might change their position after hearing what Haspel had to say in the classified briefing. Supporters of the resolution, like Sen.

He also said: "There's not a smoking gun, there's a smoking saw".

Bob Corker of Tennessee and Lindsey Graham of SC are leading the charge to offer new legislation that would rebuke Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as well as potentially limit United States involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen, saying their push was bolstered by the classified briefing, which detailed intelligence linking the Saudi leader to the murder of the US-based journalist.

The chief prosecutor's office in Istanbul filed an application on Tuesday to obtain the warrants for Ahmad al-Assiri and Saud al-Qahtani, described in court documents as being "among the planners" of Khashoggi's grisly killing.

Last week, the Senate voted by a wide margin to take up debate on a resolution to end controversial United States support for the war in Yemen being waged by Saudi Arabia and its allies since 2015 and to extend Global Magnitsky Act sanctions against suspected conspirators in the Khashoggi murder to the crown prince as well. Lindsey Graham and Tennessee Sen. Obviously that's a huge sign of progress, but an even more important takeaway is the fact that these senators say they feel purposefully mislead by a Republican administration, and have made a vote against its interests.

"If we don't stop it now, it gets worse later", Graham said, adding that MBS has been a "wrecking ball" the Middle East. "There is no way we're gonna continue to do business with Saudi Arabia as if this never happened".

Last week, the Senate overwhelmingly voted to move forward on a resolution curtailing USA backing for the Saudi-led war in Yemen.

It was unclear whether Khalid knew that Khashoggi would be killed, the USA newspaper said, but he made the call at the discretion of his brother, MBS. Human rights groups say the war is wreaking havoc on the country and subjecting civilians to indiscriminate bombing.

"Guilty", Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tennessee), who now chairs the Foreign Relations committee, said after the briefing.

President Trump has equivocated about assigning blame for Khashoggi's killing, frustrating lawmakers from both parties.

On November 20, he said: "It could very well be that the crown prince had knowledge of this tragic event - maybe he did and maybe he didn't". "I would really question someone's judgment if they couldn't figure this out".

"I think the secretary of defense and secretary of state are in a bad spot because the president has given this bear hug to MBS and to the entire Saudi regime so they are bound to carry out his freaky policy", Murphy said, using an acronym for the crown prince.

The murder has damaged Riyadh's global reputation and Western countries including the US, France and Canada have placed sanctions on almost 20 Saudi nationals.

"The prosecution's move to issue arrest warrants for Asiri and Qahtani reflects the view that the Saudi authorities won't take formal action against those individuals", one unnamed Turkish official told Reuters.
