Family Says Body Found In Costa Rica Is Missing Florida Woman

Family Identifies Body Found in Costa Rica as Missing Florida Woman Carla Stefaniak

An Airbnb representative said the company is cooperating with local authorities in Costa Rica.

Carla Stefaniak of Hallandale Beach, Florida, went to the Central American country to celebrate her 36th birthday but never boarded her November 28 return flight after messaging friends that it was "pretty sketchy" at her resort. "The family is just trying to process this hard time".

The trip to Costa Rica was meant to be a weeklong celebration of Stefaniak's birthday.

Detectives who interviewed people who had contact with the suspect, Espinoza Martinez, before Stefaniak went missing on November 28 grew suspicious when they noticed his statements were contradictory, Espinoza, the government spokesman, told reporters.

Investigators say they found a large amount of blood in the room of the Airbnb where Stephaniak was staying.

Bismarck Espinoza Martinez, 32, a Honduran national who moved to Costa Rica months earlier, was detained in the case.

According to its listing on TripAdvisor, the Villa le Mas is a compound with seven vacation apartments.

The owners of the building that housed the Airbnb said they have temporarily closed the facility. The following day, Stefaniak's family launched an all-out search, blanketing social media with missing person fliers, as her brother flew to San Jose to meet with investigators.

For her birthday, she and her sister-in-law chose to visit Costa Rica for a short trip.

Stefaniak and Burton had been texting each other via WhatsApp, Burton said. On Nov. 23, she posted a photo of her looking at the ocean that said, "Future resident of Costa Rica".

Little did he know that would be the last time he would ever see his neighbor. "I'm going to miss this place", she wrote.

The 36-year-old had been on holiday in Costa Rica with her sister-in-law April Burton, who had to leave a day early due to an obligation back home.

Soon after, authorities said an unidentified body was found not far from the Airbnb. Language wasn't an issue; Stefaniak was born in Venezuela, then moved to Tampa in 2000 with her family and finally settled in South Florida.

The owner of the Airbnb told relatives she was seen entering an Uber with her luggage around 5 a.m. Wednesday, but Uber records do not show a transaction. "She went there the night before and left at 5 a.m.", said Caicedo.

Carla Stefaniak, of Miami, was celebrating her 36th birthday, Fox13 reported.

"In the following days, we will release critical digital leads of the investigation, continue asking questions about the involvement of others in Carla's murder", said the statement posted to Facebook. She had checked in for her flight but never got on the plane, concerning her family and friends.

Authorities discovered her body, partially concealed near the rental, on Monday.

"Stefaniak dropped Burton off at the airport in San Jose on November 27 and returned their rental auto", said Katie Gardner, the family's spokesperson, according to the Miami Herald. But then he changed his story, and investigators scrutinized those details, according to Costa Rican media.
