Thousands poured into the South African city's FNB stadium for Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100.

While the majority got home safely afterwards, others were targeted by thieves as they left the stadium. "The crime spree lasted more than five hours".

The festival, which is a part of the Global Citizens movement to "end extreme poverty", commemorates 100 years since Nelson Mandela was born.

Many fans had been given free tickets in exchange for signing petitions and sending tweets to world leaders, urging them to take action to improve education, water supplies, sanitation, health and other issues.

She said the muggers were even pulling knives and guns on the defenceless revellers.

The organisers of the Global Citizen Festival have insisted that the safety of guests was "always of paramount importance" after scores of people were attacked outside the stadium on Sunday, December 2. Security outside the festival became a massive issue once people began leaving the venue waiting for their Uber and Taxify rides.

The Global Citizen Festival announced that it had made commitments to the value of $7-billion that will go towards helping millions of people throughout the world.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo, speaking to the public broadcaster SABC from Port Elizabeth, said that police had recorded one incident of mugging after the concert, and that the police will not be seeking CCTV footage from the petrol station as there have been no criminal cases reported except for one.

A spate of muggings marred a charity concert at which Beyonce, Jay-Z and other stars performed in honour of Nelson Mandela.

I wish we were able to write about feelgood stories and businesses booming and silly viral videos all day (we sneak a few in), but we live in South Africa, and unfortunately that means much of the news that comes our way isn't rainbows and unicorns.
