Instagram Is Deleting Fake Likes, Followers & Comments

Instagram Is Purging Fake Followers Obtained Through Third-Party Apps

Instagram launched a new crackdown on users who inflate their follower counts and engagement metrics using unauthorized third-party apps.

Some users try to game Instagram's algorithms with such tactics, in the hopes that it will result in their content being more widely viewed on the platform.

Instagram on Monday said it'll begin removing fake likes, follows and comments from accounts that use third-party apps to boost their popularity on the platform. "It is our responsibility to ensure these experiences aren't disrupted by inauthentic activity".

"We've built machine learning tools to help identify accounts that use these services and remove the inauthentic activity", Instagram stated on their blog. The owners of the flagged accounts will be alerted of the deletion of all fake likes, follows, and comments. "Change your password to stop them from accessing your account".

The company announced this move as part of Instagram's policy change today. If it determines that your account has used one of these services, you'll see an in-app message when you log in that explains why this suspicious activity has been removed.

These services often require users to hand over their private log in information, something Instagram warns violates its community guidelines and compromises individual security.

Purging inauthentic activity will be an ongoing effort for Instagram, so this is not just a one-and-done occurrence.

Instagram users who continue to use such third-party apps possibly seeing their "experience impacted", but the service did not specify in what ways.

If you follow influencers on Instagram, chances are their followers and likes aren't from real people.
