Submarine which disappeared with 44 crew is found one year later

Relatives of the missing crew gathered at the Mar de Plata Naval Base after the submarine went missing

There has been "positive identification of the ARA San Juan", at a depth of 800 meters (2,600 feet), a statement on Twitter from the navy said.

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA-The Argentine government acknowledged on Saturday that it lacked the proper technology to rescue the submarine found deep in the Atlantic that disappeared a year ago with 44 crew members aboard.

Navy spokesman, Rodolfo Ramallo, told Todo Noticias TV that the Ocean Infinity ship 'decided to do a new search and, thanks to God, it was able to find the zone.

The ARA San Juan sunk after returning from a mission near the most southern tip of the South Amerian continent.

ARA San Juan disappeared 270 miles off the Argentine coast previous year after reporting an "electrical breakdown".

A missing submarine has been found deep in the Atlantic a year after it disappeared with 44 crewmen aboard.

The Seabed Constructor, a vessel owned by USA search firm Ocean Infinity, which set out in September on the latest attempt to find the San Juan, made the discovery.

The navy said the blast could have been caused by a "concentration of hydrogen" triggered by the battery problem reported by the captain.

After the sub went missing, the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) said it had detected a noise a few hours after the vessel's last contact.

At the time of the disappearance, the Navy said water that had entered the submarine's snorkel caused its battery to short-circuit.

The San Juan, a German-built TR-1700 class submarine, vanished nearly exactly one year ago as it was sailing from the southernmost port of Ushuaia to Mar del Plata after a patrol. Some families of missing crew members blamed the government for under-funding the Navy.

Teams will dive down to whatever is left of the San Juan during an operation that is expected to last about seven hours, but defence minister Oscar Aguad has warned that the country "does not have the means to recover the wreckage".

Four relatives from the bereaved families were on board the Ocean Infinity vessel when it located the stricken submarine.

Footage showed relatives of the lost submariners grieving in Mar del Plata as they received the news that the submarine had been found.

Experts say the sub would have been crushed by water pressure once it dropped below about 600 meters. It was the only major ship Argentina lost in the war over the disputed Falkland Islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas.
