Japan’s minister of cybersecurity has never used computer

'I don't use computers,' Japan's minister in charge of cybersecurity tells Diet

Which takes us to Japan, where the country's newly appointed deputy minister responsible for cyber security admitted in parliament yesterday that he hasn't touched a computer in his 43-year career.

"Since the age of 25, I have instructed my employees and secretaries, so I don't use computers myself", he told an open-mouthed group of MPs in the lower house.

Japanese cybersecurity minister Yoshitaka Sakurada - not a big computer guy.

Although the minister is not expected to have much hands-on responsibility in the handling of either cybersecurity or the Olympics, Sakurada's high-profile bungling is an embarrassment for Abe. "I have never used a computer in my life".

Although Sakurada assured press that he had no need for devices to effectively fulfill his tech-heavy role, the New York Times reports that his confusion over basic questions - he didn't know if nuclear power plants allow USB drives, and may not know what a USB drive is generally - left other lawmakers concerned.

His comments were met with incredulity by opposition lawmakers.

"If a hacker targets this Minister Sakurada, they wouldn't be able to steal any information".

Sakurada's responses in parliament and news conferences have drawn criticism before.

"This is not something I should be meddling in in my capacity", he said, according to the Asahi newspaper. "Indeed it might be the strongest kind of security!"

Ministers are tapped by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and Sakurada was named to his position in the latest Cabinet reshuffle last month. "It's beyond my jurisdiction".

Ruling party lawmaker Yoshitaka Sakurada, also in charge of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was replying Wednesday (local time) to questions from independent and opposition legislators.

Addressing another parliamentary committee, the minister had slipped up by saying the Olympics would cost Japan ¥1,500 instead of ¥150 billion (RM55.34 instead of RM5.53 billion).
