Google will take over part of DeepMind’s health business

Powles Tweet

Dominic King, the British artificial intelligence lab's health chief, was responding to criticism after Google said it would absorb DeepMind's health division.

DeepMind's vision for Streams is now to become an AI-powered assistant for nurses and doctors by combining advanced algorithms with an intuitive design.

DeepMind has confirmed that its DeepMind Health outfit is being handed over to Google to continue its health research and academic partnerships but with the search engine mogul marketing its products.

Now, its parent company, which bought the United Kingdom based firm in 2014, is looking to take on the health programme directly, putting an increased amount of data directly into the hands of the Googletron.

DeepMind also began research into healthcare in 2015, and an initial deal with the NHS to develop Streams was later ruled by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) to have used the medical data of 1.6 patients illegally, since the patients involved were not informed.

DeepMind has also been criticised by health watchdogs in the past. DeepMind said that it remained fully committed to all its NHS partners and to delivering current projects.

The news has raised concerns about the privacy of NHS patient's data which is used by DeepMind and could now be commercialised by Google. A subsidiary of the company, DeepMind Health, focuses on creating technologies and solutions that help identify various medical conditions through machine learning and alert health-care providers.

As part of the move, the DeepMind Health brand will cease to exist, with the independent team moving under Google Health.

'When we have promising results that could have impact at scale, we'll work closely with the Streams and transnational research teams at Google on how to implement research ideas into clinical settings'.

At the time, DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman said that patient data would never be "linked or associated with Google accounts, products or services".
