France fires back at Trump's lack of 'common decency'

Nationalism and Patriotism Don't Have to Be Opposites

On Tuesday (local time) - two days after flying home from a two-day visit to France - Trump took to Twitter to post multiple blistering attacks on Macron, France's performance in both world wars and France in general.

But the personal rhetoric between the two men had always been friendly, in contrast with previous Franco-American disputes when French-bashing was sometimes on full display, such as during the war in Iraq that France opposed.

No sooner had the USA president touched down after a weekend in Paris attending centenary commemorations of the Armistice, he issued a flurry of spectacularly undiplomatic missives on Twitter.

French President Emmanuel Macron shakes hands with US President Donald Trump after a meeting at the Elysee Palace on the eve of the commemoration ceremony for Armistice Day, 100 years after the end of the First World War, in Paris, France, Saturday.

"Yesterday was November 13", Griveaux said, according to the minutes of a meeting of France's Council of Ministers - remarks that were widely reported in French media.

He added: "The problem is that Emmanuel suffers from a very low Approval Rating in France, 26%, and an unemployment rate of nearly 10%".

Trump's back and forth with European leaders isn't the only time in recent memory that the president has clashed with the US's closest allies during an global trip. "He was just trying to get onto another subject", Trump posted.

"I don't think the French expect me to respond to tweets but to continue this important history". Even so, Mr. Macron's biggest concern was that Mr. Trump's ire stemmed from a giant misunderstanding. But Macron sought to allay fears that Europe meant to become a rival to the USA, while also stressing the continent's independence.

But asked whether there was a deeper misunderstanding between the two countries after Mr Macron's comments about a European army infuriated Mr Trump, the French President said being a United States ally did not mean being subservient.

One of Trump's major gripes was Macron's suggestion to create a European army with greater autonomy from existing structures like NATO-itself a favored target for Trump. "And to do this, we can not depend on (others), including the United States".
