Actor Rebel Wilson loses appeal on Australian defamation case

Rebel Wilson's defamation battle ends as High Court rejects bid for appeal

The "Pitch Perfect" star was awarded A$4.5 million (RM18.86 million) in damages against Bauer Media previous year over articles claiming she lied about her age and background to further her career. The court ordered the actress to pay back nearly $3 million ($4.1 million AUD), and 80 percent of Bauer's legal costs.

She said she had "done that successfully", adding: "At the end of the day that is what matters".

The court awarded her millions in aggravated damages - Australia's highest defamation payout - after ruling she had lost out on film roles due to the articles.

Justice Dixon strongly criticised Bauer Media for failing to properly investigate the claims about Wilson, and for publishing them despite knowing they were false.

On Friday, Bauer Media said it was "pleased that the High Court has chosen to bring an end to this matter".

Within a month, Wilson's lawyers sought special leave to appeal against that decision, arguing the court made several errors.

But Bauer successfully appealed the dollar figure in June, with the Court of Appeal finding there was no basis for Wilson to be awarded damages for the potential loss of roles. I am proud of this victory and all of the hard fight!

Joni Ernst, who, as Republican Conference Vice-Chair, is the first woman to serve in her party's elected leadership since 2010. On the Democratic side, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was re-elected by affirmation, according to a source familiar.

But lawyer for Bauer Media David Jackson QC said that point was based on a "misconception of the appropriate tests".

"In our opinion there are insufficient prospects that an appeal will succeed", Justice Virginia Bell said at the court in the national capital, Canberra.

Hollywood actress Rebel Wilson's bid for her case to be heard in the High Court of Australia has not been granted.

"Bauer Media is invested in its Australian business now more than ever", the statement reads.

Bauer Media was obviously thrilled by the decision.

"Our audience trust our content and our writers and they love our iconic brands like Woman's Day and Australian Women's Weekly".
