Raj stars as India defeats Pakistan

After Maroof and Dar’s departure India were able to restrain Pakistan to 134 runs

Dayalan Hemalatha brought the Indians back into the game when she sent back both Pakistani batters in the 19th over shortly after they had reached their respective half-centuries. She finished with 56 off 31, with nine fours and a six, also becoming the third wicketkeeper to score more than 1000 T20I runs. The Pakistan women's team was fined 10 penalty runs for consistently running on the pitch before they succumbed to a sevenwicket defeat at the hands of India in a women's World Twenty20 game in Guyana on Sunday. The 35 year old hence announced that this might be her final world cup. The side was down to 30/3 very early in the innings. After another run-out, Pakistan were three wickets down in the Poweplay.

Pakistan were soon reduced to 30-3 but India spilled five chances and Bismah Maroof (53) and Nida Dar (52) put on 93 within 12 overs to help them to 133-7.

Dar was dropped on 15 and again on 29, and Maroof enjoyed some good fortune on 28 when a gentle top-edge spooned over the umpire's head but was allowed to drop to the ground after bowler and fielders left it to each other.

On a different note, India emerged victorious over Pakistan by 7 runs in the encounter. Their efforts were dented though as 10 penalty runs were awarded to India due to the Pakistan batters running on the pitch twice after being officially warned by the umpires.

Mithali dominated in a 73-run opening partnership with Smriti Mandhana (26, 28b, 4x4).

By the time Raj was dismissed India was already well on their way to victory with only eight runs needed from 14 balls. Concentrating on timing and placement on a slowish wicket, and playing with a straighter blade as compared to Pakistan's methods at the start of their innings, the Indian openers batters slowly overhauled their opponents.

"I think today they felt that because there are spinners in the Pakistan side, and it would be wise to open, so I opened the innings for India", Mithali Raj added.
