Jersey conservationists react to Iceland Christmas advert

YouTube Greenpeace International

Debate has taken over the internet recently after a Christmas campaign was banned from television for being "too political".

Greenpeace originally created the ad, which features a voiceover by Saving Mr. Banks' Emma Thompson, and it had run on the environmental campaigning organisation's website for months.

She tells the orangutan: "They destroy all of our trees for your food and shampoo".

It's seen large areas of forest in south-east Asia and Africa destroyed, with 100,000 orangutans lost between 1999 and 2015. Though the campaign was a cartoon, habitat loss due to palm oil production is a very real issue that has largely contributed to the orangutan being classified as critically endangered.

In response to the issue, Iceland removed palm oil from all of its own-brand products, becoming the first major supermarket in the United Kingdom to do so.

An emotional Christmas ad for UK-based grocery chain Iceland has been banned from TV after being deemed "too political" by the advertising watchdog.

The outpouring of social media support has led some to suggest that the supermarket chain may have known its ad was going to get banned all along and has carefully orchestrated the reaction.

Jaguars fall to the Colts: Where does this team go from here?
What a turnaround. "I just think it's incredible we go another game without (allowing) a sack against that defense", Reich said. The Jaguars (3-6) gave up 29 points and 306 yards in the first half to Indianapolis and lost 29-26 on Sunday.

Watch Kevin Durant, Draymond Green exchange heated words in Warriors loss
Additionally, the conflict wasn't just limited to Green and Durant as others confronted Green for his late-game decision-making. Draymond Green's competitive fire led to an open conflict with a teammate last night that apparently didn't end on the court.

But, Clearcast, who decides which adverts are and aren't allowed in the United Kingdom, ruled it "contravenes the prohibition on political advertising".

Iceland will still show TV ads, but in the form of 10-second clips advertising its palm oil-free products.

Between the ban coming to light on Friday and the time of writing, some 550,542 signatures have been lodged on a change.org petition to "release Iceland's banned Christmas ad on TV".

Palm oil production is believed to have been responsible for around 8 per cent of the world's deforestation between 1990 and 2008.

"We think this is a huge story that needs to be told".

Yup, the advert sure does do its utmost to hit people right in the feels, as the kids say, and it's always nice when your company saves on ad spend and lets social media do the hard yards.

And an online petition to have the ad appear on commercial television has attracted almost 600,000 signatures.
